Starting Tonight: Watch IPL matches Live on YouTube

Google and IPL have teamed up to live stream the IPL matches online on YouTube. Starting tonight, all IPL matches will be broadcasted live on IPL’s YouTube channel.

Google acquired online broadcasting rights for all the 60 matches scheduled within a time span of 45 days. The greatest advantage of online broadcasting of these matches is that viewers from other countries where IPL isn’t being telecasted on TV, will be able to see them leading to the increase in the popularity of IPL. Google and IPL are likely to equally share the revenues generated from online broadcasting.

However, you might set back a little bit because the online broadcast on YouTube will be delayed by 5 minutes.

Google Maps adds Biking Directions

Getting directions using Google Maps is getting simpler with the addition of small but very useful features. Till now, users could get directions from place A to place B based on three different modes of travel – By car, By public transit and By walking. To facilitate bikers and cyclers, Google added one more option to the list – Bicycling.

For those skeptical, let me tell you that each of these modes are way different from each other. For example, if you choose the ‘By car’ mode, Google Maps will plot out the trails excluding small roads and lanes which are other-wise given more priorities when you select the ‘Walking’ mode.

The official Google blog points out that the Bicycling mode avoids steep hilly areas and also the busy city intersections. Like all the other modes, the Bicycle mode, too, is extremely modifiable. You just need to click and drag on the path trail from where you wish to modify your path.

How to: ‘Unsend’ or Undo a sent message in Gmail

Beginner Tip

This feature has been around for a while but if you are a new Gmail user you may not be knowing it. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you just regret hitting that “Send” button too soon? You just click it absentmindedly and the very next second you feel the sky all over your head. The mail’s already been sent and all you can do now is to face-palm.

While I can’t help you with your absentmindedness, I can surely tell you a way how to ‘unsend’ or undo that sent message. There is a very cool feature in Gmail Labs called ‘Undo Send’ which does what it says. It displays an ‘Undo’ link right after you send a message from Gmail.

Of course there’s a small trick here if you care to know. After enabling this feature, when you click ‘Send’, the message is not delivered at that very moment. Instead, it keeps the message on hold and displays the link ’Undo’ for few seconds. If you do not click the ‘Undo’ link within that small period of time, it assumes that you are present-minded and proceeds to send the message that was kept on hold.

Enabling the ‘Undo Send’ feature in Gmail:

» Login to your Gmail account and click the ‘Gmail Labs’ icon in the top-right corner.

» From the list of features, find the ‘Undo Send’ feature and ‘Enable’ it. Click the ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom.

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx does a massive UI makeover

Few weeks back we did a post regarding Ubuntu Lucid finally dropping the aging ‘Human’ theme. Little did we know that the UI makeover wasn’t just restricted to the OS until the UI freeze happened a couple of days ago.

As shown by Jono Bacon (Ubuntu Community Manager at Canonical), the massive revamp includes a new ‘lighter’ theme for Lucid Lynx, a different font for Ubuntu Logo and a complete redesign of all Canonical websites and Ubuntu communities.

Mozilla separates Firefox’s plug-ins as different processes

In Dec 09, Mozilla talked about the ‘out of process plugins’ (OOP) architecture that could render plugins in Firefox as seperate processes making it easy to identify a malperforming plugin and end it using the task manager. Turns out, Mozilla is all set to release the Mozilla Developer Preview 3.7 alpha 2 (codenamed Lorentz), feature packed with OOP.

Yes, it is an alpha preview version which means it’s basically for testing purposes. However, I assume this feature will definitely be incorporated in Firefox 4 which is anticipated to be a grand superset of what Firefox is today.

The following screenshot, courtesy Mozilla Links, shows each plugin running as different processes by the name ‘mozilla-runtime.exe’.

Mozilla’s Benjamin Smedberg says,

When a plugin crashes, the Mozilla crash reporter kicks in and submits the crash report to Mozilla. Then we replace the plugin display with the crashed-plugin UI. When you reload the page, we restart the plugin process.

Neat! Isn’t it? Now before giving out the download link I’d like to mention it again that this is an Alpha version of the software which might contain bugs. So use at your own risk.

When you step into a race much later when your competitor has already made considerable benchmarks, you need to be highly innovative and an excellent strategist to catch people’s eyeballs. And Bing is doing precisely that.

Considering the mass hysteria created by Farmville, a web based game on Facebook, Microsoft thought it wise to promote Bing on Farmville by luring its users free virtual ‘cash’, supposedly quite a ‘valuable’ asset in the game. This resulted in 80 million users to see the big ‘Bing’ logo on their virtual farms.

The banner read ‘Become a fan of Bing now and get FREE Farm Cash’.

The idea was not only unique, it proved to be a massive hit. The number of fans on Bing’s Facebook page rose from a few lacs to millions and counting. Yes, the thing has gone viral. So, if you are running out of Farmville cash (or whatever) you know what you need to do, right?

PS: I hate Farmville. Never played it. Never will. Period.
